Reactive Dog Rehabilitation

What methods do I use?

As a Certified Behaviour Adjustment Trainer, I utilise a methodology called BAT (behaviour adjustment training) founded by Grisha Stewart. This methodology involves controlled exposure therapy during set-ups with stooge dogs. A list of the stooge dogs used can be found below.

Behaviour is often multifaceted and so you will be given an integrative training plan. By taking a multipronged approach we are more likely to create behaviour change and see results. I aim to teach your dog how to feel differently when they see other dogs and be able to offer alternative behaviours.

Reactivity rehabilitation involves a three session 1-1 training package that includes a behavioural assessment, two sessions with our trained stooge dogs, lifetime access to the online reactivity course and access to the reactivity WhatsApp group for £200. Small group classes and walks are also available to support you throughout the reactivity rehab process. To further support the behaviour modification process, fun classes for reactive dogs involving tricks, scent work and more are also available throughout the year.

Exposure Therapy done right

I’m a big advocate for the use of exposure therapy in the rehabilitation of reactive dogs and have a team of 'stooge’ dogs. These are dogs selected for their temperament and training history and range in breed, size, neutering status, play style and more. This allows us to safely build up your dogs confidence, practice their training and develop their social skills in a structured and safe way.

Here is a photo from the Sunday walk group. All of these dogs have gone through reactivity training with me and are at a point that they can take part in group work.

Does your dog bark and lunge on the lead at other dogs? Do you dread walks and feel ashamed and embarrassed when they react? Are you tired of hiding behind bushes and walking at unsociable hours?

You deserve to enjoy walks with your dog and not spend your time dodging potential triggers.

Having a reactive dog can really test your bond. I’ve been where you are and so I know how stressful it can be. I want to change this for you and your dog so that you can both live a fulfilling life together.

Everyday I work with dogs just like yours and I have helped even the most desperate guardians find hope and start to enjoy life with their dog again. The methods I use work when other methods may have failed. Take a look for yourself at some of my rehabilitation clients and their stories below.

The Stooge Dogs

  • Ruby the Rottweiler

Ruby is a social butterfly and loves nothing more than a good play. She is great at adapting her play technique according to the dog she is with. Ruby is a great dog for social skills learning and close proximity interactions including play.

  • Betty the Rottweiler

Betty has been on her own reactivity journey and is great for distance work.

  • Odin the Labrador cross

Odin is a lively boy who loves everyone. He is a great stooge for when we are looking at teaching calmness and disengagement towards a bubbly character.

  • Henry the German Shepherd

Henry is an entire adolescent male. He also has a lovely temperament and so he is a great option for teaching dogs to disengage from entire males.

  • Charlie the Collie cross

Charlie if often the stooge you will meet first for distance work as he is calm and disengaged from a distance. Charlie has been on his own reactivity journey with his supportive guardian, Beth from RosfieldK9s.

  • Mia the Rottweiler

Mia is a sweet and docile girl who is great at disengaging from dogs.

  • Dolly the Pug X Pekingese

Dolly is a rescue who has been through her own behavioural and health challenges. Being an older lady, at 7 years of age, she prefers a chilled out pace to life however, is still happy to engage in crazy gremlin play.

  • Rolo the Cockapoo

Rolo is a very chilled neutered male Cockapoo who is great at respecting another dog's boundaries. He's often one of the dogs your dog will be working with for social skills learning.

  • Ruby the Toy Poodle

Ruby was rescued from a puppy farm and despite having a tough start to life, is a very relaxed and sociable girl. She is great for social skills learning and close proximity interactions including play.

  • Hugo the Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Hugo is a sweet natured neutered male.

Rehabilitation clients

Milo is currently going through a 1:1 training package. He initially struggled with the addition of his new little brother, Hugo and would growl and snarl at him. We put a multi focus training plan in place, along with management techniques, and Milo is making fantastic progress. Here he is cuddled up with Hugo in his bed.

Here is Tucker during a 1:1 training session. We have a stooge dog present, Ruby the Rottweiler, who has been chosen due to her gentle and calm temperament. Tucker is gaining confidence and learning how to build healthy social interactions.

Angus has gone through the three session reactivity rehab with me. He would intensely stare and lunge at unknown dogs. Here he is doing some close proximity work with our stooge dog, Ruby, and he even felt confident enough to initiate a sniff and let her sniff him back!

Lottie the rescue Lurcher presented with lunging, barking and growling on the lead towards other dogs. As a Sighhound, she could spot a dog a few fields away and would begin to react. Through the stooge sessions, we’ve built her up to have her first calm greeting with another dog.

Skye the Gordon Setter presented with anxiety based reactivity and would bark and lunge on the lead at the sight of other dogs. Here she is with one of our stooge dogs, Rolo, being a happy and calm lady!
